15th Battalion in Service

The 15th Battalion Australian Imperial Force (AIF) was raised on 15 August 1914 immediately following the onset of World War I (WWI). The AIF (Light horse) and the infantry division were placed under the command of General William Bridges. Bridges fell at Gallipoli in May, 1915 and by default, command was transferred to General William Birdwood. Birdwood was confirmed as commander of the AIF and the I Anzac Corps on 14 September 1916. .......

John Thomas Hynes

John Thomas Hynes was fondly known as 'Jack' and was the son of Michael Hynes from the village of Broadford 14 miles from Limerick, County Clare, Ireland. Michael Hynes immigrated to Australia and married Anne Smith of Fenniscourt, County Carlow, in St. Patrick's Church Gympie Queensland in 1871. John was born in Herberton, North Queensland on 11 March 1883 the seventh of nine children born to Michael and Anne Hynes. Hynes continued in the family tradition as miner following the gold rushes of the era an occupation that eventually led him to the gold mining industry centred in Charter Towers.  ...........
