Dr Jennifer Lambert Tracey BA (ANU), M App.ScUC, Ph.D (UC)
Archaeologist ~ Historian ~ Heritage Consultant.

Australia’s colonial history and archaeological heritage are Jennifer’s major research interests. Her Irish and English ancestors were amongst the first settlers in the fledgling port of Townsville, North Queensland, where she was born. She attended St Patrick’s College, The Strand, and trained as a nurse at the Townsville General and Mater hospitals. With her husband, Michael MacLellan Tracey, she has four daughters, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Awarded the Degree of Master of Applied Science (M.App.Sc.) by the University of Canberra for the thesis: Imprints in the Dust: Historical and archaeological evidence of mining methods used on goldfields in south-eastern NSW and north-eastern Victoria during the 19th and early 20th century.

Awarded a PhD Research Scholarship at the Cultural Heritage Research Centre, University of Canberra.

Awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The degree was conferred by the University of Canberra, for the thesis titled:  Masonic Influence in the Settlement, Pastoral and Commercial Development of the Colony of New South Wales: 1788 - 1860.

Established commercial / industrial photographic agencies in Sydney and Townsville. Responsibilities included project planning, public relations, advertising and promotional organisation; liaison with consultants, corporate advertisers, local, state and commonwealth government departments and organisations e.g. CSIRO; research and scripting for two documentary films produced for ATA Studios, Sydney on the subjects of Australian history and wildlife.

Advertising and Public Relations Executive Officer, David Jones, Townsville, Qld. (1976-1979). Duties involved the design of advertising and promotional material; liaison with graphic artists, photographers and media representatives for its production; consideration of advertising proposals as presented by departmental heads; negotiation with corporate advertising companies for in-house promotions; discussions with departmental heads on the effectiveness of media presentations and reporting to the executive management.

Coordinated sixteen exhibitions of art and sculptural works throughout Australia and in London. Negotiated contracts for nine major public sculptural commissions and undertook the arrangements for the representation of Australian artists' works in state galleries, corporate and private collections both in Australia and overseas.

Responsibilities of this position required negotiations with the Premiers' Department, Ministers and staff of the Queensland Government; discussions directly with the Agent-General for Queensland in London; negotiation and correspondence in respect to sponsorship with executives of several corporate sector companies, including BHP, QANTAS,  British Airways, Western Mining; coordination of interviews with members of the British and Australian media; consultation and exhibition planning in conjunction with the National Trust of Queensland, the Queensland Arts Council, Adelaide Festival Committee, local government authorities and historical societies.

Negotiations, historical research and project management related to design commissions undertaken for the Australian Bicentennial Authority, Sydney; The Royal Australian Mint, Canberra; the Singapore Mint; and Monnaie de Paris, France. Duties performed during this period included: negotiations and correspondence with corporate, public sector and ministerial staff concerning the acceptance of design contracts; project planning and historical research; liaison with corporate and government officials; acting as a public representative of the artist where necessary.

Lecturing undertaken in Canberra focused on Australian archaeology, colonial history and heritage places. Field trips were conducted in association with each course.
